May 2008: Truckee PD hosted our annual Peace Officer's Memorial service in honor of all law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty.

May 2008: Law Enforcement agencies from all around the area were represented at the service. In 2007, nine officers paid the ultimate price in service to the citizens of California.

May 2008: Officers Munoz, Moreau, and Blaisdell were recognized by MADD for their excellent DUI arrest record.

April 2008: Officers take advantage of the Fire Department's stairwell fire simulator to conduct entry training.

December 2007: Truckee PD officers are required to maintain firearm proficiency at all times. Officers undergo quarterly range training, no matter what the weather. While it was sunny, the temperature was in the low 20's. No one complained though: Officers are always well equipped to deal with extreme cold on an extended basis. Thermal lined water-resistant snow suits, polar-rated boots and warm but dexterous gloves are standard issue.

December 2007: Range training is never limited to just the officer's sidearm. Shotguns and rifles are part of the qualification process.

December 2007: Reserve Officer Dick Grundy retired from law enforcement with over 50 years on the street. Officer Grundy's career truly spanned the ages, and it is safe to say he saw it all. TPD was proud to have Officer Grundy in our ranks, and his wisdom and experience will be sorely missed.

October 2007: Sgt. Litchie and Ofcr. Elliott went to SoCal and tested some communication dive masks for the Dive Team with Ocean Technology Systems. OTS graciously took them out to Catalina Island to demo full face masks that enable divers to easily communicate underwater in any condition.

Sgt. Hargrove and Ofcr. Walsh prepare to dive Boca Reservoir, January 2007. TPD divers must be prepared to dive to maximum depths in black water (zero visibility) at anytime to search for victims or salvage.

Officer Lopez demonstrates the danger of replica firearms. The weapons with orange tips are fake, the others are real. In a split second, and at a distance, could you tell the difference?

Fall 2006: Officers played basketball against some local kids from Sierra High School.

Sgt. Hargrove shows us that summer is a state of mind. Short-sleeves in 23 degrees.

Sgt. Johnston on patrol in an Afghan valley. Sgt. Johnston spent a year in Afghanistan in 2004 and earned the Bronze Star for Valor. He returned from a year in Iraq in mid 2007.

Sgt. Hargrove and The Chief going thru the annual water operation training at Donner Lake. Officers are re-certified every year on PWC and Jet Boat operation. Here, The Chief reminds Sgt. Hargrove that trying to dump the boss in the water is generally frowned upon.

Summer 2007: A group of kids  on innertubes underestimated the flow of the Truckee River and capsized.  They gathered onto a rock and were rescued by Truckee Fire and TPD. No injuries to the kids. Every year, TPD is called upon to rescue boaters and swimmers in the Truckee River and Donner Lake. We are reminded to never underestimate the power of nature, or the importance of using good judgment.

Summer 2006: Major collisions in the Truckee area are a common reality. Careflight and the CHP Helicopter ("H-20") are frequently on scene. TPD officers are used to working closely with the helicopters. In most cases, patients are transported to nearby Reno (Renown Medical Center) for trauma care.

Summer: Forest fires are common in the Truckee Tahoe region. This picture is from the Tahoe Donner Ridge Fire, 2003. Truckee Airport is frequently used by CDF and other agencies for air staging. Truckee has not escaped an annual significant forest fire (at least one!) for a long, long time. The last catastrophic fire was the 2001 Hirschdale Fire that destroyed most of the canyon between Truckee and Reno. 2007 had one major fire in the canyon near Gold Ranch (NV/CA State Line) that was out of control for several days, and Tahoe Donner was again threatened by another ridge fire similar in scope to the 2003 fire.

Because we live in such a fire-prone area, TPD takes a strong stance against fire carelessness, and works closely with Truckee Fire to mitigate fire risks. TPD and Truckee Fire encourages everyone, homeowners and visitors alike, to practice fire safety at all times.
